SHALOM:

A bar or bat mitzvah is a special occasion not only for the young man or young woman, not only for the family, but for Judaism. Without learned children, our religion with its rich traditions would not survive.

Our sages tell us that the children played a very important role in the fact that God gave us the Torah.

Before God gave the Torah to the Jewish people, He demanded guarantors that the Torah, which up until then was in God's possession, in the spiritual realm, will be studied and cherished.

Jews made a number of suggestions which were rejected by God. Only when they declared, "Our children will be our guarantors" did God accept and agree to give them the Torah.

Giving our children a Torah education from a very early age is essential to the survival of Torah and Judaism.

With this is mind, the optimum way to prepare and become a bar or bat mitzvah is with study with your rabbi in your synagogue.

More and more people, 60% of American Jews, are not affiliated with synagogues. This is not because they are being frugal, or not spiritually aligned with Judaism. Polls and research shows they cannot tolerate the sinat chinam, the baseless hatred, and harsh politics, that occurs in many temples.

So many have destination Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremonies, and the Hilton Head , SC area is a wonderful place to do so, as families can join in this safe and beautiful environment. I have also conducted Bar and Bat Mitzvah services on cruise ships. I was the first rabbi to conduct both Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies on the world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas.

As I do with weddings, I will put together an intimate service that can include parents, siblings, grandparents, other relatives and friends.

If one is doing a destination Bar or Bat Mitzvah the optimum is to have all of the study done and completed in your home town with face-to-face learning with your rabbi. Then I can spend some time via phone with the young person, and parents, to ensure all runs smoothly, and conduct the destination ceremony.

The other way of course, is when I do teaching over the phone and via email weekly, with the student.

If one wants me to prepare their child for a bar or bat mitzvah and the child lives locally, I will first ask them to consult my town's local pulpit rabbi.

Rabbi Arthur Segal can also conduct Bar or Bat Mitzvah services for adults who did not do this ceremony when they were young teenagers. Rabbi Arthur Segal, an ordained rabbi with semikah, will sign and present a official certificate of becoming a bar or bat mitzvah, an important Jewish document.

In all ways a destination Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a joy that all will remember and cherish!

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: DEREK ERETZ: GREAT IS PEACE: BLUFFTON SUN: HATRED: IDLENESS

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL:  DEREK ERETZ:  GREAT IS PEACE: BLUFFTON SUN:  HATRED: IDLENESS

CAUSELESS  HATRED IS AT ODDS WITH ETHICAL SPIRITUALITY

EXCERPTED FROM: 'GREAT IS PEACE: A MODERN COMMENTARY ON TALMUD TRACTATE DEREK ERETZ ZUTA' BY RABBI DR ARTHUR SEGAL AND SARA DAVIES

http://www.jewishspiritualrenewal.org/books/great-is-peace-a-modern-commentary-on-talmud-bavli-tractate-derek-eretz-zuta

Shalom and Peace:

We continue with Talmudic Jewish Ethics (Derek Eretz). For two months we discussed four of the seven abominations taught from Proverbs 26:25: "Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart.'' The Rabbis say they are: thoughts, scorn, haughtiness, cruelty, idleness, causeless hatred, and an evil eye. We continue with two more.

Idleness: Sociologists have reported what happens when folks have too much time on their hands. Some synagogues, churches, organizations, and board rooms turn into wrestling arenas. Idleness causes our monkey minds start to dwell on ourselves. Idleness is the yetzer ha ra's, the evil inclination's, petri dish. We become prisoners in bondages of self. We are the jailors of our own Mitzraim, our own narrowness.

When our neglected pride, combined with idleness, fueled by ego, gets us into positions of so-called power, ugliness can develop. You can easily tell which folks are having issues in this area by looking at an organization's newsletter. If you see the same names highlighted year after year, there is a good hint that more is going on than altruism.

Causeless Hatred...sinat chinam. The Talmud teaches us that this was the major cause of the destruction of Jerusalem's Temple in 70 CE and the reason God's Holy Presence (Shekinah) left. The sages were not talking of Romans hating Jews. They were talking of Jews hating Jews for no reason. They spoke of cliques, elite parties, terrible lashon ha ra (gossip), and of rabbis and Jews disrespecting one another. Sinat chinam keeps many ethical spiritual Jews away from synagogues. In fact 60% of American Jews are unaffiliated. Polls site the same reasons as why more than half of American Jews avoid synagogues. The Talmudic Rabbis said God and a hateful person cannot abide in the same Universe. By a fortiori deduction, God and hateful people cannot dwell in a synagogue together. The rabbis wrote 2000 years ago how they sadly wanted to stay away.

Benji came to breakfast Saturday morning. "I'm not going to synagogue today!" he said to his sister Sarah emphatically.
"Yes you are." Sarah replied calmly.
"No I'm not ! I don't want to ever go again!" Benji said with obvious irritation. "The people don't like me, they ignore me , they are mean to me and each other. I won't go back."
"Yes, you will go ", said Sarah with confidence. '' I'll give you two reasons. Number one, you're 45 years old . Number two, you're the Rabbi!"

ABDOMINAL BEHAVIOR CAN BE ALL AROUND US

EXCERPTED FROM: 'GREAT IS PEACE: A MODERN COMMENTARY ON TALMUD TRACTATE DEREK ERETZ ZUTA' BY RABBI DR ARTHUR SEGAL AND SARA DAVIES

Shalom and Peace:

Today we continue with more of Jewish Ethics (Derek Eretz) from the Talmud. Last month we discussed the first two of the seven abominations that the Rabbis teach from Proverbs 26:25: "Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart.'' The sages say the seven are: thoughts, scorn, haughtiness, cruelty, idleness, causeless hatred, and an evil eye. Today we will continue with two more.

Haughtiness: It is an exaggerated sense of one's importance that shows itself in the making of excessive or unjustified claims. It is much more than arrogance. It's delusional. One's self esteem is so low, one's spiritual connection is so disconnected, that one cannot see the reality of all the good that God has granted him. One therefore makes up more than he is with lies. One eventually believes these lies which is why haughtiness is delusional. One will do ''resume augmentation,'' and grant titles to themselves which have not been properly bestowed.

When one is delusional one truly cannot tell true from false. When others believe their lies and their false titles, and feed them back to the haughty individual, he believes his own false press. When Proverbs says his ''speech is charming,'' the sociopathic con man is being described.

The Talmud teaches that God and a haughty person cannot abide in the same world. The rabbis discussed how the Hebraic priests, the Sadducees, during Roman occupation, were so haughty that the Shekinah, God's Holy Presence, did not reside in Ezra's Temple. The Talmud says if a priest is haughty you can be sure of his Cohan lineage.

Cruelty can be described as indifference to suffering, and even having positive pleasure in inflicting it. It is perverse and Sadistic. Volumes have been written on cruelty. No amount of Torah study, prayer, or rabbinic nagging can correct the truly cruel. Only intense psychotherapy, with medication and in-patient treatment, can keep a truly cruel person from harming another.

But unfortunately not all cruel people have been diagnosed and/or are in treatment. They can be our spouses, neighbors, co-workers, fellow congregants, etc. They are also sociopathic.

We will continue with the other three abominations on this list next month.
