DOMINICAN REPUBLIC:
It's capital, Santa Domingo, has a synagogue, gated, as many synagogues throughout the world are now, sadly. The Centro Israelita de República Dominicana is the main synagogue of the Jewish community in the Dominican Republic. Av Sarasota 21, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic . Its near the only Tony Roma's in town on a main street, minutes by taxi from the Historic Colonial section.
On the north side of the country, 4 hours by car from the capital of Santa Domingo, is the town of Sosua. At the 1938 Evian Conference, Rafael Trujillo offered to accept up to 100,000 Jewish refugees; about 800 German and Austrian Jewish refugees received visas by the Dominican government between 1940 and 1945 and settled in Sosúa . The government provided them with land and resources with which they created a dairy and cheese factory, named Productos Sosúa still in existence today. Descendants of the original settlers still live in Sosúa, where they maintain a synagogue and a museum. The town was little known until tourism took off in the island in the mid 1980s. http://www.sosua-villas.com/jewish-museum/ Phone Number: (809) 571-3565 Website: http://www.sosuamuseum.org/ Location: Calle Doctor Rosen, Sosua,
